Herbalist Gardening Workshop / Celebrating Earth Day

Join farmers & herbalists Katia Bechara and Gabriela Serra of Mother Earth Miami Farm for an introduction to medicinal plants and herbalism workshop. Gabi and Katia tend a 2,500 square foot plot at the Little River Coop Farm in North Miami that they have packed full of tropical medicinal flowers, roots and herbs and want to share their bounty and knowledge with you. The workshop will include an introduction to all the different ways to use plants as medicine (infusions, decoctions, poultices, etc) with overview of the most common medicinal plants found in subtropical Miami. Use your newfound knowledge about the different beneficial uses of plants and use plant material from the farm to make an oil infusion for you to take home as a start to your own herbal apothecary. Then watch a demonstration as Gabriela and Katia make a salve with calendula infused oil and local beeswax, so you can try your hand at solid salves at home. Each participant will go home with a printed handout to use as reference material, 1 jar of infused oil, a small pot of homemade salve and a newfound skill set you can use to continue learning and making them at home!

This workshop is designed for beginners who are interested in starting to learn about the basics of medicinal plants. While there are many books and online resources about making salves, infused oils and using plants as medicine South Florida is a unique subtropical growing environment with many native or cultivated plants available that don't grow in most areas of the country, and we think its important to focus on learning about plant species from your area instead of relying on purchased materials grown elsewhere.
