Hashtag lunch bag Miami Halloween Edition

#HASHTAGLUNCHBAG IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE ON A LOCAL LEVEL CAN MAKE A TREMENDOUS IMPACT, ONE SMALL ACT AT A TIME. LEARN ABOUT HOW WE GOT STARTED AND THE THINGS THAT CONTINUE TO KEEP US MOVING.

TICKETS

#HASHTAGLUNCHBAG BEGAN ON CHRISTMAS 2012 IN A LOS ANGELES APARTMENT BY A GROUP OF FRIENDS WHO WERE HAVING TROUBLE FINDING A FUN & MEANINGFUL WAY TO GIVE BACK. AFTER A FEW FAILED ATTEMPTS, WE DECIDED TO TAKE IT UPON OURSELVES AND CREATE OUR OWN EXPERIENCE. WE WENT TO OUR LOCAL GROCERY STORE AND BOUGHT ENOUGH FOOD TO PREPARE 100 LUNCHES (THE KIND YOUR MOM MADE YOU IN GRADE SCHOOL THAT MADE THE OTHER KIDS JEALOUS). WE SANG AND DANCED. WE CRACKED JOKES. WE TOOK BREAKS TO WATCH FUNNY YOUTUBE VIDEOS. WE CONNECTED WITH EACH OTHER ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL, WHILE HAVING THE TIME OF OUR LIVES! WE HIT THE STREETS NEAR THE SANTA MONICA PIER AND VENICE BOARDWALK LOOKING FOR ANYONE THAT COULD USE A MEAL. WE SMILED WHEN ASKING PEOPLE IF THEY WERE HUNGRY. WE EXCHANGED PLEASANTRIES WHILE HANDING OVER OUR CREATIONS. WE ACKNOWLEDGED THEIR HUMANITY, AS WELL AS OUR OWN. WHEN WE WERE DONE, WE FELT AWESOME AND WANTED TO SHARE WITH OUR FRIENDS! SO WE DID. WE SHARED ON EACH OF OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS, JOKINGLY TAGGING OUR POSTS WITH #HASHTAGLUNCHBAG AS AN ODE TO HASHTAGS.... PLUS IT RHYMED WITH WHAT WE WERE DISTRIBUTING (SIMPLE ENOUGH, RIGHT?).

WE DIDN'T ORIGINALLY INTEND TO REPEAT OUR EFFORTS BUT SHORTLY AFTER SHARING, WE RECEIVED AN ABNORMALLY LARGE AMOUNT OF LIKES/COMMENTS/CALLS/TEXTS/EMAILS FROM PEOPLE TELLING US HOW AMAZING THIS LOOKED & WANTING TO JOIN US FOR "THE NEXT ONE." RIDING THE HIGH OF OUR GOOD DEEDS, WE DECIDED TO REPEAT OUR EFFORTS A MONTH LATER IN JANUARY 2013. MORE OF OUR FRIENDS JOINED, MORE MEALS WERE MADE, AND MORE PEOPLE WERE FED. ONCE AGAIN, WE FELT AWESOME AND ONCE AGAIN, WE SHARED. THE RIPPLE CONTINUED AND MORE PEOPLE WERE HITTING US UP WANTING TO KNOW HOW THEY COULD GET INVOLVED. WE RAN IT BACK FOR ANOTHER GO 'ROUND IN FEBRUARY 2013, GROWING OUT OF OUR APARTMENT TO A LOCAL RESTAURANT. WE SET A GOAL OF MAKING 1,000 MEALS. 100 HUNDRED PEOPLE SHOWED UP FOR THE PARTY. WE ADDED LOVE NOTES OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO EACH MEAL TO FURTHER ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE WE WERE FEEDING, REMINDING THEM THAT THEY WEREN'T FORGOTTEN. JUST LIKE WE DID, EVERYONE WENT ON TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES ON THEIR SOCIAL PLATFORMS, INTRIGUING AND INSPIRING THEIR FRIENDS AND THEIR FOLLOWERS.

THE RIPPLE CONTINUED AND EVER SINCE, WE'VE HOSTED #HASHTAGLUNCHBAG EVENTS AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH IN LOS ANGELES. THROUGH OUR COMMITTED EFFORTS, WE BEGAN TO SEE OTHERS, FRIENDS AND STRANGERS ALIKE, REPLICATE OUR MODEL. WE SHARED OUR STORY WITH ANYONE INTERESTED AND EMPOWERED MANY TO BRING OUR MOVEMENT TO THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY WITH SIMPLE DO-IT-YOURSELF INSTRUCTIONS. TO DATE, OUR MOVEMENT HAS GROWN TO 100+ CITIES HOSTING #HASHTAGLUNCHBAG EVENTS AROUND THE GLOBE! WE NEVER THOUGHT THAT OUR SMALL ACTIONS ONE CHRISTMAS MORNING WOULD HAVE GONE GLOBAL, INSPIRING OTHERS TO SPREAD LOVE, ONE LUNCH BAG AT A TIME.

OUR RAPID GROWTH LED TO THE FORMATION OF THE LIVING THROUGH GIVING FOUNDATION, A REGISTERED 501(C)3 NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT EMPOWERS HUMANITY WITH THE TOOLS TO CREATE & BENEFIT FROM ORGANIZED ACTS OF LOVE. VIA WWW.HASHTAGLUNCHBAG.OR.

HERE IN MIAMI WE GOT STARTED BY A YOUNG WOMAN WHO MOVED FROM LA TO MIAMI AND WAS IN SEARCH OF LIKE-MINDED INDIVIDUALS. DECEMBER, 2013 WAS THE FIRST HASHTAGLUNCHBAG MIAMI. AFTER THAT EVENT HTLB MIAMI WANTED TO BE MORE IMPACTFUL AND TEAMED UP WITH OTHER INDIVIDUALS WHO SEARCHED FOR THE SAME OUTCOME. SINCE THEN WE HAVE BEEN MORE IMPACTFUL AND HAVE FED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN THE MIAMI DADE COUNTY. WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO YOUR PART AND PLANT YOUR SEED WITH US FOR A BETTER FUTURE.

My Miami Story

RSVP

The Wynwood Yard is participating in My Miami Story in partnership withThe Miami Foundation on Tuesday, October 23rd fostering and providing a space for "conversations that spark change".

“My Miami Story is about getting Miamians to take ownership of issues they care about, whether it’s making sure our kids get a good education, finding a safe, affordable place to live, or landing a job that’s close to home. These conversations are about creating a space for you to link up with friends, old and new, who feel the same way (and maybe some who don’t). They’re about discovering how each of us can join the thousands of people making Miami-Dade County a better place to live for everyone.”

We’ll be hosting four discussions surrounding local pressing issues:

We’re Drowning!: Sea-Level Rise and Sustainability

News of imminent sea-level rise, including the recent dire report from the U.N. may want to make you either not get out of bed for a few days or start planning your move away from Miami. Or are you energized to take action? Let's talk about sustainability in Miami's urban oasis. We're open to your ideas on this conversation!

Some Waste, While Some Want: Food Justice

Presented with Hungry Harvest

There is so much food wasted both in Miami and around the country. Meanwhile, many of our neighbors go hungry and it's not always the people who you might think: It could be your co-worker or student or someone else you know. Fresh, healthy produce can often seem out of reach for those who need it most.

Let's talk about what's going on locally to make food more fair and accessible for all. The Yard is proud to host this conversation in advance of our first ever Give Miami Day campaign to raise funds for our nonprofit work with school field trip/food justice programs at The Yard.

Cranes and Planes: Gentrification and Preserving Community

With all of the changes in the Wynwood, Allapattah, and Little Haiti neighborhoods, among others in Miami, let's talk about what those changes mean to you. Does growth have to mean losing the soul of a community? What do you want our communities to look like?

No Waze Around It: Housing, Money, and Traffic

Does it sometimes seem like all you and your friends ever talk about it how long it takes you to get to work? Do you spend a lot of your Miami time sitting in traffic? But, how to live closer to work without paying crazy $$$$ in rent? Let's talk about the hustle of Miami life and what it takes to survive here.

This event is on rain or shine and free with RSVP.

EALM October: Speed Networking & GRAMMY Party at the Yard
5:30 Arrival / Welcome
6:00 - 7:00 Speed Networking
7:00 - 10:00 The Recording Academy South Florida Chapter's Florida Rally

RSVP

We hope you had a great summer. We are thrilled to resume our EALM activities this fall!

What’s happening this month? It’s all about you, our members, Miami, great music and advocacy. We are bringing back speed networking with a happy hour at The Wynwood Yard. Expect drink specials, fun and connection, followed by a special "block party" and rally program by the South Florida chapter of the Recording Academy (aka the GRAMMYs) starting at 6:30pm. They are celebrating a big win for the modern media bill's passing Congress. Come for the networking, stay for the music!

The idea of this fun, lively event is not to rack up business cards, but to get to know and explore our network--the incredible leaders working in the arts in Miami. To go beyond the intros and small talk, we are planning a few rounds that get us into finding genuine points of intersection and potential seeds for innovation together. All the while, we aim to have fun and enjoy each other in the process. All are welcome and we appreciate your help in spreading the word. Street parking is available.

Q: It's a happy hour event. What's the plan?

A: EALM is hosting this event during happy hour (4-8pm). Drink specials include $6 punch and $8 cocktails. We will be in the area just west of the bar. You are welcome to purchase food or drink, and you're welcome to stay and continue the conversation and company after the event ends at the GRAMMY-organized rally with guest speakers and music on the mainstage.

Q: What're the deets for the post-EALM GRAMMY event?

A: The GRAMMY event is called District Advocate: Florida Rally.
The Recording Academy Florida Chapter is hosting a rally to create awareness and educate members about advocacy issues that will be a priority for District Advocate. This event will be open to the local community with live performances, guest speakers, and opportunities to share support via social media. Performers: Teedra Moses, Suenalo, Brika, Yoli Mayor, Elsten Torres, Nicole Henry, Dama Vicke, SunGhosts, Mish Elle, DJ Musicat; Guest speakers: Jon Secada, Manu Manzo, Rico Love, Marcella Araica, Julio Bague, Jorge Mejia, Michael Lewan, Doug Emery.

To RSVP to the rally: http://bit.ly/2OdrHHB

Q: Who is EALM? What's the speed networking event about?

A: Emerging Arts Leaders of Miami meets monthly. The regular meetups feature a mix of speakers, leadership conversations, and open dialogue on pressing topics relevant to the local arts administration & entertainment community. The goal is to connect, learn, and have fun.

Stay tuned: EALM Programs currently being planned for November and January include a small-scale dinner to spark new relationships and learning with senior arts managers and a seminar on grant writing. Details to come. If you're interested in attending a dinner, please hit us up at ealmiami@gmail.com.

If there’s a topic of interest to you that you would like EALM to consider for its programming, please let us know! Shout out to ealmiami@gmail.com.
